My Story

As founder and lead designer of Tulip ‘n Twig I strive to make each creation that leaves my hands a work of art. Whimsical touches with twigs, grasses and other natural elements are a signature touch of mine.

From a very young age I always knew that flowers were going to be a large part of my life. As a young child the earth on my parents’ land lended me bountiful blooms each season and some of my earliest memories are of me and my fist stuffed with petals to take into the house. In high school I landed my dream job at a floral shop and began training in this craft. Even while studying music in college I came home to the shop on weekends to help service weddings and create arrangements. It was when I had the privilege to work for a floral designer and master gardener from Europe, however, that my designs finally came into their own. In Helga’s shop I discovered that flowers could truly be created into a form of art. Nature takes my breath away with its raw beauty and whimsical qualities and I take great inspiration in its textures and colors bringing that into each piece I make.

I’m an artist at my core and love to express myself through writing, playing music, cooking in my kitchen and offering simple hospitality to anyone who walks across our farmhouse threshold. I believe that life is better with faith, family, friends and for every sunset there’s a sunrise right around the bend. I treasure the adventure I am on with my husband David and our four beautiful children right outside the mountains of Charlottesville, Virginia.

“Joanna is a magic maker! I hardly knew anything about flowers and she really took the time to work with me to find something that fit our wedding vibe. Her work is phenomenal, but her positivity and kindness is even more amazing. We highly recommend her!”
